![]() ![]() New OpenGL users will be largely rendering programming students who have no business learning obsolete API's. OpenGL Extensions Viewer is a free-of-charge software that has been recognized by Softpedia as a 100 free and safe from spyware, adware, and viruses. I feel like users getting into game developers these days will learn Unity or Unreal, not OpenGL. Perhaps most saliently, the entry point to game development has changed. With a little bit of training on triangle meshes and pixel shaders it's conceptually simple to get started. There are many great libraries such as GLM that can help with the matrix stuff. If a beginner writes fixed function code and then for the reasons above decides to upgrade to a modern version of OpenGL, they have to rewrite code, and that's no fun. That might not be a problem for simple 2D stuff but many new users will want to have things like models with more than 100 tris. You can access this stuff via the extension zoo, but a beginner is not likely to be able to easily grok the extension zoo, and it's easy to fall into undefined behavior if you do it wrong. Using it means a lot of the newer features of OpenGL (4.x) are not available. It's all essentially obsolete and many devices don't support it anymore.Well I guess we're delving into opinions here, but I think there are a lot of reasons not to use any fixed function stuff.
